Te Aro Pˆ was established by Ngˆti Mutunga of Taranaki in 1824. After they left the Wellington area to reside in Wharekauri (Chatham Islands), their whˆnau (family) and hap (subtribes) of Ngˆti Ruanui, Te Ëtiawa and Taranaki iwi, took up residence. An earthquake in 1855 raised the land and drained the low-lying areas of Te Aro.

Te Aro pā in Wellington was located where Taranaki Street and Courtenay Place now intersect. It was built by Ngāti Mutunga, one of the tribes that migrated to the region with Te Āti Awa. It was later occupied by other tribes including Ngāti Ruanui, Ngāti Haumia and Ngāti Tupaia.

2011年10月27日 · Te Aro Pa was a thriving Maori village located in what is now central Wellington. European settlement eventually covered the village. When a Victorian building was demolished a few years ago to make way for an apartment building, the remains of some of the whare (huts) from Te Aro Pa were found.
