Te Pōhue is a small settlement in inland Hawke's Bay, in New Zealand's eastern North Island. It lies on State Highway 5, 31 kilometres inland from Whirinaki. [1] The remote settlement was once on a Māori track cutting across the tribal boundaries of Ngāti Kahungunu and Ngāti Tūwharetoa, two tribes who had made peace after a conflict.

Te Pōhue is located directly on an old Māori walking track from the interior of the island to the coast. A track taken by William Colenso in 1847, the first recorded European to do so, and upgraded to a road in 1869 by the Armed Constabulary when the Napier-Taupō route became strategically important.

Situated in Te Pohue area of Hawke’s Bay, near the mighty Mohaka River. The ideal spot to camp when indulging in local activities. Great place to stop off for a night or two on your way to Hawke’s Bay. We have spots for tents and caravans as well as private rooms with shared kitchen facilities, all set amongst our many magnificent trees.

Remote Te Pōhue, on the Napier–Taupō highway, was once on a Māori track cutting across the tribal boundaries of Ngāti Kahungunu and Ngāti Tūwharetoa – tribes that were in conflict with each other for a period, then made peace. Around 1870 a coach road was cut through the dense forest, and a hotel was built at Te Pōhue for travellers.

Now the lake (on private land) is set back behind willows, and Te Pohue is a smooth north-west curve on a wide sealed road through a panoramic sweep of rolling paddocks and various stages of plantation pine – from the cornbraid rows of baby trees to ravaged, clear-felled hills.
