Now that you have learned the keywords of the sport, you are ready to step onto the field. It is 63 feet long and 8 feet wide with two clay boards opposite each other, at nearly 60 feet for professionals; you can find shorter lanes for amateurs. You can play in two teams of up to four people, and the players will take turns to throw the tejo.

In Tejo you can play in an informal or formal manner, to collect points or as a championship rank competition. Players throw their Tejo in the board. The scoring in tejo consists on 4 elements: mecha, bocin, moñona and mano. Mecha occurs when the tejo hits one of the paper triangles with gunpowder and a small explosion and/or smoke appears, which grants 3 points. Bocin happens when the tejo is firmly fixed in the clay within the metallic ring and it awards 6 points to the achiever.

Instead of trying to toss bean bags at holes in a wooden board, players throw heavy-metal pucks (tejos) at a clay-covered board (tablón) with a center target (bocin) decorated with four, small triangular packets of gunpowder (mechas) that ignite when struck.

Tejo exhilarates both Colombians and tourists alike. The name of the game is also the name of the iron puck that is thrown against the clay target. The field can differ in size, but they all have one Cancha de Tejo (Tejo board) on each side, which leans against the wall.
