Terra | The EOS Flagship
For 20 years, Terra, the flagship Earth observing satellite, has chronicled changes on Earth. Designed and built in the 1980s and 90s, NASA and Lockheed Martin engineers set out to build a satellite that could take simultaneous measurements of Earth’s atmosphere, land, and water.
Mission - Terra

In December 1999, NASA launched the Terra satellite as the flagship mission of the Earth Observing System to answer these questions. Terra carries five instruments that observe Earth’s atmosphere, ocean, land, snow and ice, and energy budget.
About Terra
Processed Terra data are available through several NASA data centers. Current life expectancy: Terra has far exceeded its design life and has a strong chance of operating successfully into the early 2020s. Terra began drifting in February of 2020. ASTER | Terra
Unlike the other instruments aboard Terra, ASTER will not collect data continuously; rather, it collects an average of 8 minutes of data per orbit. All three ASTER telescopes (VNIR, SWIR, and TIR) are pointable in the crosstrack direction.
MODIS - Terra
3 天之前 · With its sweeping 2,330-km-wide viewing swath, MODIS sees every point on our world every 1-2 days in 36 discrete spectral bands. Consequently, MODIS tracks a wider array of the earth’s vital signs than any other Terra sensor. For instance, the sensor measures the percent of the planet’s surface that is covered by clouds almost every day.

1 天前 · Terra’s five instruments produce 83 core data products which are distributed through the Land Processes Distributed Active Archive Center (LPDAAC), the Atmospheric Science Data Center (ASDC), Ocean Color Web, Level 1 and Atmosphere Archive and Distribution System, and the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC).

The long-awaited break of the Chasm 1 rift in the Brunt Ice Shelf in Antarctica occurred on January 22, 2023, spawning Iceberg A-81, approximately 1550 square kilometers in size, as observed by NASA’s Terra satellite on January 24, 2023, marking a culmination of the rift’s growth since the 1970s.
