U.S. Highway 285 (US 285) travels from Sanderson, Texas to Denver, Colorado. In Texas, US 285 begins at an intersection with US 90 in Sanderson, traveling through Fort Stockton and Pecos before exiting the state into New Mexico between Pecos and Carlsbad .

On the Texas side of the Permian Basin, Highway 285 is one of the main roads used to carry supplies to and from the oilfields in West Texas.

TxDOT is proposing improvements to US 285 North from FM 1216 north of Pecos, Texas to 0.1 mile south of the New Mexico state line. The corridor is approximately 51 miles long and passes through Culberson and Reeves counties. The corridor is split into three separate projects, which are described in detail below.

US 285 is a heavily used corridor for both local and commercial vehicles with 463 recorded crashes on this part of the highway between 2016 to 2020.

US Route 285, known by locals and frequent travelers as the “Death Highway,” is one of the most dangerous stretches of road in West Texas and nationwide. But it isn’t bad luck that makes this highway one of the deadliest in the United States (in 2013, US 285 had a fatality rate higher than any other freeway in the country).
