Regulating standards for nursing and midwifery education. We’re the independent regulator for nurses, midwives and nursing associates. We hold a register of nurses and midwives who can practice in the UK, and nursing associates who can practice in England.

It’s structured around four themes – prioritise people, practise effectively, preserve safety and promote professionalism and trust. Each section contains a series of statements that taken together signify what good nursing and midwifery practice looks like. You’ll see that we’ve changed the look of the Code.

The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) is the regulator for nursing and midwifery professions in the UK. The NMC maintains a register of all nurses, midwives and specialist community public health nurses and nursing associates eligible to practise within the UK. It sets and reviews standards for their education, training and performances.
