[2] Alton was originally settled in the 1816 by Martin Middaugh Jr, a United Empire Loyalist who received a 200 acre land grant from the Crown, likely for military service.

Alton was settled in the early 1800s on the banks of Shaw's Creek (a tributary of the Credit River) and was a thriving industrial centre for many years. This small village in the northwest corner of Caledon maintains its historic charm and offers plenty to see, experience, eat and drink.

Alton is an organically evolved mill village landscape as defined by the Town of Caledon: Criteria for the Identification of Cultural Heritage Landscapes and is focused on the milling heritage which extends along Shaw’s Creek through the existing village.
