The Indian Section of the Theosophical Society was registered on 31 August 1903 with its Headquarters at Varanasi. It is the National Society for India to carry out within its jurisdiction the objects of the Theosophical Society.

The membership of the Indian Section of the Theosophical Society is composed of: i) Members of Chartered Lodges or Centres, ii) Members directly attached to the Section Headquarters, hereinafter described as “Unattached” members. A member of the Indian Section may join any number of Lodges or Centres as an Associate Member.

Henry Steel Olcott (1832-1907): Founder-President of The Theosophical Society. Born on 2 August 1832, he was the oldest son of a businessman Henry Wyekoff Olcott and Emily Steel Olcott. His parents moved from Orange to New York City at some point of time, and at age fifteen the boy entered the New York University.

The Theosophical Society does indeed desire to promote the spiritual growth of every individual who comes within its influence, but its methods are those of the ancient Rishis, its tenets are those of the oldest Esotericism.
