Korea's largest temple, Tongdosa, is often called "the temple without a Buddha" because it contains no outdoor statues of the Buddha; rather it is arranged around several stupas which contain Jajang-yulsa's relics of the historical Buddha. The road that meanders up to the temple wanders through a forest called "Pine trees dancing in the wind".

Tongdosa temple is one of Korea's five "Palace of the Jewel of Nirvana" temples, where the relics of the Buddha substitute for a statue. Precept Master Jajang brought the relics, including part of the Buddha's robes, from China and enshrined them (646C.E).

Noted for the enshrined sari from Buddha (Buddha’s relics), Tongdosa Temple is one of the most recognized temples in South Korea. It is a UNESCO World Heritage temple and located within a distance of a day trip from Busan.

2020年6月29日 · Tongdosa Temple, which is located in northern Yangsan, Gyeongsangnam-do, is the largest temple in all of Korea with twenty hermitages spread throughout its vast grounds. Tongdosa Temple means “Passing Through to Enlightenment Temple,” in English. Tongdosa Temple was first founded in 646 A.D. by the famed monk Jajang-yulsa (590-658 A.D.).

Renowned as one of the Three Jewel Temples of Korea (Haeinsa Temple and Songgwangsa Temple being the other two), it is also the largest temple in Korea. Often called “the temple without a Buddha,” Tongdosa distinguishes itself with its courtyards, structured around several pagodas and a Buddhist altar, rather than the traditional statues.

Tongdosa is one of the most important temples in Korea. Founded by the Priest Jajang-yulsa upon his return from China in 646 AD, it reputedly houses relics of the historical Buddha himself, including a robe, a begging bowl, and a bone from his skull.

Situated on Yeongchuksan Mountain in Yangsan-si, Gyeongsangnam-do Province, Tongdosa is the main temple of the 15th diocese of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism. Yeongchuksan, which is also known as Chukseosan, is a rocky mountain.
