Part Time 4WD: This generally refers to a system that allows the use of the vehicle in 2 wheel drive. Prior to the Active Trac system, a part time system meant a transfer case type system. AWD, All-Trac, Full time 4WD: These terms refer to a 4WD system that is always engaged. It implies the use of a center differential rather than a transfer case.

TRAC (traction control) works in 2WD-Hi or 4WD-Hi with open center diff (essentially AWD or full-time 4WD-Hi mode where you can drive an any surface). ATRAC works in 4WD-Hi or 4WD-Low with center diff locked (off-road mode if you will). I believe there is some difference in how it works based on whether you are on or off-road.

I read the informative explanations regarding the different Toyota 4WD systems and have a question regarding the Tacoma High 4 Selctor switch. I recently test drove a Tacoma Double Cab 4WD. The sales rep was new and it was just his 4th day on the job. I asked if there was any restrictions on engaging the High 4 slector. He said he wasn't sure.

Toyota replicated the problem, after some doing, and they're trying to fix it as the 4wd acuator is a problem--it's backordered to Japan which means the truck is out of action for a month. There are similar reports of damage and problems listed on the NHTSA website.

2006年7月1日 · Hi, I own a 1990 Toyota 4Runner, 4WD, 6V, that has 250,000 mi on it but the engine was completely rebuilt 90,000 mi ago. The clutch is about to give up, while the transmission still works OK (some problems shifting into 1st gear).

Toyota wanted about $700 for a remote start and FS $400 - hence why I went with FS. Shortly after the install, as I back out of a parking spot, I start having transmission issues. The car now slams into gear. Check engine, VSC, & 4WD indicator lights all come on. Away to the dealer I go thinking I have a powertrain issue.
