Hepatorenal syndrome is classified as “prerenal” acute kidney failure because it happens when your kidneys are otherwise healthy. Hepatorenal syndrome-acute kidney injury (HRS-AKI) is one of many potential causes of acute kidney injury in patients with cirrhosis and ascites.
