Tripitaka is the main character on the television series The New Legends of Monkey. She is portrayed by Luciane Buchanan. Tripitaka is a kindhearted girl, who is willing to risk everything for the resistance. She did lie to Monkey, Sandy, and Pigsy about her gender, but that was only to get them to trust her. Tripitaka was born in The North Water.

Eventually, Monkey is released by the monk Tripitaka (三蔵法師, Sanzōhōshi), who has been tasked by the Boddhisatva Guanyin (観世音菩薩, Kanzeon Bosatsu) to undertake a pilgrimage from China to India to fetch holy scriptures (implied to be the region of Gandhāra in the song over the closing credits).

Masako Natsume (夏目 雅子, Natsume Masako, November 17, 1957 – September 11, 1985) was a Japanese actress from Tokyo. Widely popular in Japan, she gained worldwide recognition for her portrayal of Tripitaka in the TV series Monkey, which is now considered a cult classic.

Monkey is the story by Wu Ch'êng-ên based on the ancient Chinese legend tracing the origins of Buddhism. A scholar secretly concocts a plan to bring together a few warriors and a monk, named Tripitaka, to undertake a quest to resurrect the Monkey King and find the Heavenly scrolls that were stolen by Monkey 500 years ago and hidden away secretly on earth.

In Season 2, Tripitaka teaches Monkey how to write in the god language, and does not use the Crown Sutra as much. She is very kind to him, and they communicate with one another whenever they come to a disagreement.

Tripitaka is actually a Mahayana Buddhist (Greater Vehicle) which teaches love and compassion - Tripitaka always wants to help people and forces Monkey to help. The Mahayana tradition was founded by Je Tsongkhapa who was an emanation of Manjushri (The Wisdom Buddha).

In the series, Tripitaka, a valiant, teenage girl, liberates the Monkey King — a god long trapped in stone — in a quest to find seven sacred scrolls and save the world from evil.
