A rubber tyred gantry crane (US: rubber tired gantry crane)/ RTG (crane), or sometimes transtainer, is a wheeled mobile gantry crane operated to ground or stack intermodal containers. Inbound containers are stored for future pickup by drayage trucks, and outbound are stored for future loading onto vessels.

Rubber-tyred gantry cranes (RTGs) are the most popular equipment choice for container stacking at terminals around the world, especially where high-capacity stacking and good manoeuvrability are key requirements. With a global installation base of some 8,000 machines, approximately 60% of the world’s container terminals use RTGs.

RTG cranes are operated by onboard drivers. The main function is to load containers from trucks or terminal tractors to the container block and vice versa. Typically RTG’s span 5-8 containers in width and 3-5 in height. Standard RTG cranes are equipped with diesel engines to provide power for travel and lifting.
