The tops of some of these conical hats were pointed while others were truncated, ending in a flat top. It was generally accompanied by a veil (cointoise) that usually emerged from the top of the cone and was allowed to fall onto the woman's shoulders or even to the ground, or was pulled forward over the hennin, often reaching over the woman's face.

Conical hennins appeared around 1430 among aristocratic women and spread more widely in the following century. Some of the hat’s tops were conical and pointed, while others were truncated and ended in a flat top. Hennins were generally accompanied by a veil or cointoise that fell on the woman’s shoulders and in some cases even to the ground.

A conical hat, usually tall and narrow, worn by late-19th and early-20th century school pupils as a punishment and/or humiliation. It often featured a large capital "D" inscribed on its side, to be shown frontwards when the hat was worn.

Later, though, this hat spread more widely, especially in the truncated form. Typically, the hennin was 12 to 18 inches (30 to 45 cm) high, generally accompanied by a veil that usually emerged from the top of the cone and was allowed to fall onto the woman's shoulders.

Toward the middle of the century (1430-1460), noblewomen were switching to truncated-cone and butterfly hats, often with ornate decoration and complex veiling. Around 1470, styles seemed to be in a free-for-all; there is one portrait with cauls, a roll, and a truncated cone .
