Students in SMIF make the asset allocation decision along with security selection decisions for the equity and fixed income portions of the SMIF portfolio. The first class to make investment decisions started in 2006, using seed money of $100,000 from a $20 million endowment gift from the McCoy College of Business Development Foundation.

Topics include assessing financial objectives, financial planning, and personal financial management. Insurance planning is emphasized.

SMIF wins first place in the Fixed Income Division at the 2018 Global Asset Management Education Forum (G.A.M.E.) VIII held in New York City, March 22-24. The SMIF team was selected to present its student-managed fund's investment strategy to a portfolio manager and won 1st place in Fixed Income Division.

Both Finance and Economics major also have opportunity to apply to the Student Managed Investment Fund (SMIF) course which manages over $1 million of the McCoy College endowment fund. The SMIF program gives selected students real-world exposure in security and economic analysis with the goal of sustaining and growing the endowment fund.

2022年5月5日 · Texas State University’s McCoy College of Business Student Managed Investment Fund (SMIF) team won second place in the undergraduate fixed income division of Quinnipiac University’s Global Asset Management Education (GAME) Forum, held March 24-25.

The McCoy College of Business Student Managed Investment Fund (SMIF) team at Texas State University finished second at the 16th Annual Texas Investment Portfolio Symposium (TIPS) Portfolio Management Competition, held Feb. 23 in San Antonio. This is the third consecutive year the Texas State SMIF team has reached the finals.

The students, who are enrolled in the university’s Student Managed Investment Fund (SMIF) course, are allowed to manage $150,000 of the McCoy College of Business Administration Development Foundation’s endowment fund. The endowment began in 2004 after Emmett and Miriam McCoy pledged a $20 million gift to the college.
