Earth's mantle is a layer of silicate rock between the crust and the outer core. It has a mass of 4.01 × 10 24 kg (8.84 × 10 24 lb) and makes up 67% of the mass of Earth. [1] It has a thickness of 2,900 kilometers (1,800 mi) [1] making up about 46% of Earth's radius and 84% of Earth's volume.

The mantle is a particular type of layer within an astronomical body. A mantle in most instances occurs in a solid object as the layer of material surrounding a definable, extra-dense core. The mantle, itself may be divided into two sub-layers and may be overlain by a layer called the "crust," as is the case with the planet Earth .

Cutting the earth we would see: 1) a very thin crust on the outside, 2) a core of significant size in the center, and 3) most of the mass of the Earth contained in the mantle.
