U-139, originally designated "Project 46", was a class of large, long-range U-boats built during World War I by the Kaiserliche Marine. Three large U-cruisers, designated Type 139, were ordered from Germaniawerft of Kiel, in August 1916.

She was launched on 28 June 1940 and commissioned on 24 July 1940 with Kapitänleutnant Robert Bartels in command.

She was commissioned on 18 May 1918 under the command of Lothar von Arnauld de la Perière, who named the submarine Kapitänleutnant Schwieger, after Walther Schwieger, who had sunk the Lusitania in 1915.
