German submarine U-161 was a Type IXC U-boat of Nazi Germany's Kriegsmarine built for service during World War II. The keel for this boat was laid down on 23 March 1940 at the Deutsche Schiff und maschinenbau AG, Bremen yard as yard number 700.

Sunk on 27 September 1943 in the South Atlantic east of Salvador da Bahia, Brazil, in position 12.30S, 35.35W, by depth charges from a US Mariner aircraft (VP-74 USN/P-2). 53 dead (all hands lost).

U 161, unter Kapitänleutnant Albrecht Achilles, lief am 24.01.1942 von Lorient aus. Das Boot operierte im Nordatlantik, der Karibik, vor Trinidad, vor Port of Spain und Santa Lucia sowie vor Port Castries. Nach 68 Tagen und zurückgelegten 9.985,9 sm über und 560 sm unter Wasser, lief U 161 am 02.04.1942 wieder in Lorient ein.
