SM U-9 was a German Type U 9 U-boat. She was one of 329 submarines serving in the Imperial German Navy, and engaged in commerce raiding (Handelskrieg) during World War I. Her construction was ordered on 15 July 1908 and her keel was laid down by Kaiserliche Werft in Danzig. She was launched on 22 February 1910 and commissioned on 18 April 1910.

This account of life in a 1914 German U-Boat was written by Johannes Speiss, First Watch Officer of the early kerosine powered submarine U9, captained by Otto Weddigen. The use of kerosine gave off a large amount of smoke and necessitated the use of a demountable funnel, this funnel was not required in later Diesel powered submarines.

On 22 September, 1914 U 9 (Ltn. Otto Weddigen) sank no fewer than 3 British cruisers in less than an hour: the HMS Aboukir , Hogue and Cressy , with the loss of almost 1400 men. This attack showed for the first time the capabilities of submarines in war.

There was another U-9 in World War One That boat was launched from its shipyard on 22 Feb 1910 and commissioned into the Imperial Navy on 18 Apr 1910. The Naval war in WWI was brought to an end with the Armistice signed on 11 Nov, 1918.
