German submarine U-997 was a Type VIIC/41 U-boat built for Nazi Germany's Kriegsmarine for service during World War II. She was laid down on 7 December 1942 by Blohm & Voss, Hamburg as yard number 197, launched on 18 August 1943 and commissioned on 23 September 1943 under Oberleutnant zur See Hans Lehmann.

On 21 April 1945 U-997 was depth charged by an Allied U-boat hunter group in the Barents Sea. A damaged periscope forced the boat to return to base. This boat was fitted with a Schnorchel underwater-breathing apparatus in March 1945. Read more about the Schnorchel and see list of fitted boats. The boat lost a man overboard in the Arctic Ocean.

U 997 wurde am 09.12.1945, vom britischen Marineschlepper HMS Bustler (W.72), auf die Position der Operation Deadlight geschleppt und am 11.12.1945 um 12:15 Uhr im Nordatlantik nordwestlich von Irland durch mehrere De Havilland Mosquito der britischen RAF Squadron 248 durch Raketen versenkt.
