German submarine U-509 was a Type IXC U-boat of Nazi Germany's Kriegsmarine during World War II. The submarine was laid down on 1 November 1940 at the Deutsche Werft yard in Hamburg as yard number 305. She was launched on 19 August 1941, and commissioned on 4 November 1941 under the command of Korvettenkapitän Karl-Heinz Wolff.

Sunk on 15 July 1943 in the North Atlantic south of the Azores, in position 34.02N, 26.01W, by a Fido homing torpedo from an Avenger aircraft (VC-29 USN/T-12), assisted by a Wildcat aircraft (VC-29 USN/F-7), of the US escort carrier USS Santee. 54 dead (all hands lost).

U 509 war ein deutsches U-Boot vom Typ IX C, das von der deutschen Kriegsmarine im Zweiten Weltkrieg eingesetzt wurde. Der Bauauftrag erging am 20. Oktober 1939 an die Deutsche Werft in Hamburg. Ursprünglich waren die Boote dieses Typs von der Deschimag AG Weser in Bremen gefertigt worden.

U 509, unter Oberleutnant zur See/Kapitänleutnant Werner Witte, lief am 23.12.1942 von Lorient aus. Das Boot operierte im Südatlantik und vor Südafrika. Es wurde am 30.01.1943 von U 459 mit 108 m³ Brennstoff, 2,7 t Schmieröl und 18 Tagen Proviant, sowie am 28.04.1943 von U 117 mit 21 m³ Brennstoff und 8 Tagen Proviant versorgt.
