2025年1月2日 · The U18B was a late model design the company marketed as a secondary, light branch service locomotive. While GE did sell more than 150 U18Bs, overall it was not extremely successful. By the 1970s, railroads had lost interest in specialized, non-switcher designs.

The GE U18B was introduced by GE as a branch line roadswitcher in 1973. Easy to spot due to its relatively short length — 54 ft 8 in (16.66 m) — it was the only North American locomotive powered by the 8-cylinder FDL engine.

U18B Phases. GE used a common body for the various U-boats, so this list is based on phases of the U30B. Phase II with the forward radiator intake mounted high had oil bath filters; low-mounted intake was for paper air filters. Phase IIf1- handrail notch in the stepwells becomes full length.

The "modular" design of GE's locomotives makes the principle of the kitbash very simple: the front and back of a U18B are essentially the same as those of a (late: final radiator design) U23B or U30B, and all you have to do is remove a bit of the middle.
