General Electric's 2500-hp, four-axle "U-Boat" has long received a lot of traction in the hobby and industry press since its formal introduction in 1960, and understandably so. Meanwhile, its three-year-younger U25C cousin has stood in the shadows.

BN U25C 5641 was GE built as CB&Q 561 in October 1965. It was the last of twelve U25C's CB&Q purchased numbered 550-561 and assigned to Lincoln, NE. Kevin Piper has a photo in his collection of the CB&Q 561 wearing Chinese Red at Lincoln, NE taken in May 1966.

The handwriting on the slide looks like it is from Dick Rumbolz. This locomotive was built October 1965 (c/n 35608), which happens to be the date on the slide.

The 16 CB&Q U28C's were built as one group by GE in 1966 and followed the number series of the U25C's which were the 550-561. All the Q U28C's were still on the BN roster when retired in 1981.

The U25C is a diesel locomotive built by General Electric intended for the United States domestic market. Launched in September 1963, it remained in production until December 1965. It was replaced by the U28C.
