SM UB-88 was a German Type UB III submarine or U-boat in the German Imperial Navy (German: Kaiserliche Marine) during World War I. She was commissioned into the German Imperial Navy on 26 January 1918 as SM UB-88 .

陛下之UB-88号艇（德語： SM UB 88 [註 1] ）是德意志帝国海军于第一次世界大战期间建造的其中一艘UB-III型 近岸潜艇 （ 英语 ： Coastal submarine ） 或称U艇。它由汉堡的伏尔铿船厂承建，于1917年12月11日新船下水，至1918年1月26日 交付使用 （ 英语 ： Ship commissioning ） 。

Commissioned on January 26, 1918, the UB-88 was 182’ in length, 19’ in beam and 510 tons. She is credited with sinking 16 allied vessels during her nine months of service. At the end of the war, the sub was one of six submarines turned over to the United States.

2024年10月22日 · The German submarine UB-88 was surrendered to the Allies at Wilhemshaven at the end of the war on November 11, 1918. She was interred there for two weeks before being taken over by USN. A crew had been dispatched from the U.S., arriving in March 1919. LCDR Joseph J. Nielsen assumed command on March 23, 1919.

The UB 88 was a small straight torpedo type of submarine (UB-III class), carrying ten torpedoes, one 8.8 cm. gun, and bombs which were used for destroying surrendered merchant vessels. She was propelled by two six-cylinder, four cycle, 450 revolution, 550 H.P. reversing Diesel engines.

UB-88 drew the longest itinerary of the five U-boats. She was assigned to the ports on the east coast south of Savannah, Ga.; ports on the Gulf coast; the Mississippi River as far north as Memphis, Tenn., and the west coast.

2024年1月24日 · The UB-88 is one of the more unique offerings in Southern California diving. For this mission, the primary objective was to gather documentation of the nets that are currently on the wreck and begin the photogrammetry modeling process.

The UB88 Project was formed from the common desire to be the first to locate and document the only German U-boat off the west coast of the United States. We didn't stop with the attainment of that single goal. Since that time we have worked to discover the remains of other sunken ships and aircraft that history has long since forgotten.

Used for tests and scuttled at San Pedro, California on 3 Jan, 1921 after being used as gunnery target by the destroyer USS Wilkes. The wreck of UB 88 was examined by divers in August 2003. The U-boat War in World War Two (Kriegsmarine, 1939-1945) and World War One (Kaiserliche Marine, 1914-1918) and the Allied efforts to counter the threat.
