Under the visionary leadership of Dr. Michael Smith, the UBC Biotechnology Laboratory was created and a gifted team of young scientists were recruited. In 2004, the Biotechnology Laboratory was renamed the Michael Smith Laboratories in honour of the founding Director.

In the Tang Lab, we develop powerful and generic AI models to help address fundamental questions in biology and medicine. Our research spans multiple scales and modalities and aims to bridge the gap between large-scale/limited-scale cellular studies and mechanistic insights that govern cellular behavior.

Through genomic, proteomic, metabolomic and biochemical approaches our laboratory is exploring two aspects of plant specialized metabolism: How its genes and enzymes can be prospected for metabolic engineering of high-value bioproducts.
