At a summit meeting in December 1981, the leaders of the Customs and Economic Union of Central Africa (French acronym UDEAC) agreed in principle to form a wider economic community of Central African states.

Cameroon joined in 1962, and in 1964, at Brazzaville, the five countries signed the Treaty establishing the Central African Customs and Economic Union (UDEAC).
