4th (County Fermanagh) Battalion, Ulster Defence Regiment (4 UDR) was formed in 1970 as part of the seven original battalions specified in The Ulster Defence Regiment Act 1969, which received Royal Assent on 18 December 1969 [1] and was brought into force on 1 January 1970.

The Ulster Defence Regiment (UDR) was an infantry regiment of the British Army established in 1970, with a comparatively short existence ending in 1992.

The gallantry and devotion to duty of the many thousands of men and women who served in the UDR was acknowledged by the large number of honours and awards for gallantry bestowed upon individuals. On 1st July 1992, the Regiment merged with the Royal Irish Rangers to form the Royal Irish Regiment.

In 1992, the UDR was amalgamated with the Royal Irish Rangers to form the Royal Irish Regiment. In 2006, the regiment was retroactively awarded the Conspicuous Gallantry Cross, which entitled it to be known as The Ulster Defence Regiment CGC. That is the wrong insignia (badge) of the Ulster Defence Regiment.

Peaked Service Dress Caps were worn by Officers of the UDR 1970-1972. The cap had a Gilt badge with lugs east/west. The badges were privately purchased. The chin strap buttons were brass with a white metal angel harp and crown surrounded by a white metal circle bearing the title Ulster Defence Regiment.
