The College of Natural and Applied Sciences (CoNAS) comprises of six (6) departments namely: Zoology and Wildlife Conservation, Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, Botany, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics. The college also has two units, namely the Central Science Workshop and Natural Sciences Consultancy Bureau that serves all departments.

It is situated on the western side of the city of Dar es Salaam, occupying 1,625 acres on the observation hill, 13 kilometres from the city centre. It was established on 1st July 1970, through Parliament Act no. 12 of 1970 and all the enabling legal instruments of the constituent colleges.

In 2015, the Department of Aquatic Science and Fisheries moved out of CoNAS to be a department with the same name of the newly formed campus College of Agricultural Sciences and Fisheries Technology (CoASFT). Therefore, the number of departments in the college now stands at 7, which are: Botany Chemistry Geology Mathematics
