Originally signed on the air on March 9, 1987, an independent television station on UHF channel 46 and was first owned by the Raleigh, North Carolina-based Capitol Broadcasting Company. WJZY became a UPN affiliate upon its launch on January 11, 1995. In 2002, UPN unveiled a new logo. WJZY changed its logo accordingly.

Its sister station is MyNetworkTV affiliate WMYT/channel 55, which broadcasts on WJZY's subcarrier tier (RF 25.4) through a channel sharing arrangement.
