Perhaps best known for its role in sustaining the Berlin Airlift, the R5D proved to be one of the most dependable aircraft ever operated by the Navy. Stories abound of the diverse loads hauled by VR-24 flight crews in the R5D.

The first six R5D-3's were acquired from the USN in 1945. In addition to logistical and transport duties, these aircraft were used for search and rescue (SAR), service with the International Ice Patrol, photographic mapping and electronic testing.

Douglas built 1,241 a special C-54C, nicknamed the "Sacred Cow" by the White House press corps, became the first presidential aircraft, ordered for Franklin D. Roosevelt. The U.S. Navy (USN) designation for this aircraft was R5D Skymaster. Postwar, commercial airliners placed more than 300 civilian DC-4 transports for use as airliners.
