It became apparent that the Task Force with the Salt Lake City was close by as the carrier USS Enterprise planes had tried to come into the Ford Island Naval Air Field that night. They were easily identified in the searchlights but trigger-happy gunners shot them down killing and wounding some of our finest aircrews.
