Launched May 21, 1936 as USS Vincennes (CA-44) named for Vincennes, Indiana and was the second Navy ship to bear the name. Commissioned February 24, 1937 in the U.S. Navy (USN) with Captain Burton H. Green in command.

On 1 September 1939—the day on which Hitler's legions marched into Poland and commenced hostilities in Europe—Vincennes lay at anchor off Tompkinsville, N.Y. She then began conducting Neutrality Patrols off the east coast, ranging into the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Yueatan, and continued these duties through the spring of 1940.

2020年11月9日 · Prior to our entry into WW Two, VINCENNES per-formed Neutrality Patrol in the Atlantic until moving to the Pacific theatre after the attack on Pearl Harbor. She escorted USS HORNET & USS ENTERPRISE on the Doolittle Raid and earned two battle stars (Midway & Guadalcanal). VINCENNES was lost during the Battle of Savo Island on November 2, 1942.

During the early hours of 9 August Vincennes was patrolling westward from Tulagi with her sister ships Astoria (CA-34) and Quincy (CA-39) when a force of Japanese cruisers attacked. In a brief, intense gunfire and torpedo battle, the three American cruisers were utterly devastated.
