USS Roper (DD-147) was a Wickes -class destroyer in the United States Navy, later converted to a high-speed transport and redesignated APD-20. She was named for Lieutenant Commander Jesse M. Roper, commanding officer of Petrel, who died in 1901 while attempting to rescue a member of his crew.

On the night of 13-14 April 1942 the Roper detected the German submarine U-85 running on the surface with her radar. The roper closed to just 700 yards from the submarine, evaded a torpedo fired from one of the stern tubes.

USS Roper (APD-20) is shown newly converted to a high speed transport on 21 November 1943 off U.S. Navy YardCharleston. Both forward stacks and their boilers have been removed for troop carrying capability. The landing craft are LCP (L)s and are used for personnel only, as her cargo carrying capacity is small.

USS Roper picks up 30 survivors from the Panamanian merchant Desert Light that was torpedoed and sunk on 16 April 1942 east of Cape Hattaras in position 35°35'N, 72°48'W by German U-boat U-572.
