Space Systems Command manages acquisition through six program executive offices, Each office has full acquisition authority and accountability within its program area of expertise and is empowered to manage all points of the acquisition life cycle, from prototyping and testing, to product, launch and on-orbit execution.

The Space Force on 8 April 2021 announced the planned structure of the SSC. Led by a lieutenant general, SSC was to be formed by redesignating the Space and Missile Systems Center, Commercial Satellite Communications Office, and other space systems programs offices transferred into the Space Force, being stood up in summer 2021.
