The Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) projection coordinates occur on most topographic maps. This is the Northing and Easting coordinates discussed below. In addition the projection is used on many ch arts and maps. It forms the basis for the Military Grid Reference System (MGRS) for US DoD maps in non -polar regions.

The UTM system divides the remainder of the Earth's surface into 60 zones, each spanning 6° of longitude. These are numbered west to east from 1 to 60, starting at 180° West longitude (roughly coincident with the International Date Line).
