Ureterovesical junction (UVJ) obstruction refers to a blockage to this area. The obstruction impedes the flow of urine down to the bladder, causing the urine to back up into and dilate the ureters and kidney ( megaureter and hydronephrosis ).

An obstruction of the ureterovesical junction happens during the development of the child in utero. The UVJ obstruction can be a direct result from a malformation that occurs when the ureters grow into the bladder during urinary tract development. It also can occur when there is a narrowing of the connection between the bladder and ureter.

Any kidney stone that is located in the ureter close to the bladder (within 1-2 cm of the bladder) is called a UVJ stone. This is the most common area for kidney stones to get stuck and cause symptoms because the UVJ is the narrowest point of the ureter. This leads to blockage in the flow of urine and dilation (swelling) of the kidneys and ureter.
