Lao National Unexploded Ordnance Programme (UXO Lao) is working in the nine most impacted provinces nationwide. UXO Lao clears land for agriculture and community purposes (e.g. schools, hospitals, temples and water supply) as well as other development activities.

The Lao Government established the Lao National Unexploded Ordnance Programme (UXO Lao) with the support of UNDP, UNICEF, and other stakeholders through Prime Minister’s Decree Number 49, dated 13 February 1996. UXO Lao is a Nationally Executed (NEX) Project of the Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare and UNDP.

2025年1月20日 · The United States has invested more than $391 million in Laos since 1995 to address the legacy of the Indochina Wars through its Conventional Weapons Destruction program, conducting survey and clearance of unexploded ordnance (UXO), landmine clearance, explosive ordnance risk education, victim and survivor assistance, and capacity development.

UXO Laos in Luang Prabang is a little centre presenting their action since Laos started to clear the millions unexploded ordnances dropped from US bombardiers. The UXO Laos Visitor Center is located behind the Chao Anouvong Monument.

With this project launch, the United States aims to double the clearance capacity of Norwegian People’s Aid in Attapeu, Salavan, Sekong and Champasak provinces. The United States is the largest donor to the unexploded ordnance (UXO) sector in Laos, having contributed more than $355 million since 1995.”

Clearing land of bombs, landmines and other unexploded ordnance (called UXO) is what UXO Lao does. We employ over 600 deminers, working in 31 districts across the country. These teams work in two ways: 1. Removing surface UXO: Roving clearance teams visit villages to remove UXO on the ground, usually reported by UXO LAO survey and awareness teams.

Lao PDR has uniquely added an 18th Sustainable Development Goal (SDG), titled "Lives safe from Unexploded Ordnance (UXO)", to address the significant issue of UXO contamination resulting from the Second Indochina War.
