The African wild cat (Felis lybica) is reminiscent of the domestic tabby (a grey-streaked cat with dark stripes), with which it’s known to interbreed successfully. It inhabits most savanna habitats in Uganda. It is a sandy brown to a yellow-grey cat, with black stripes on the tail.

We strive to protect the African golden cat in Uganda and across its range. In Uganda, we are a registered Community Based Conservation Organization (CBO) Registration Number: RBD/616/CBO/014/2021. In Africa, we are part-of and coordinating the newly created African golden cat Conservation Alliance and Working Group (AGCCA & WG).

The African golden cat has a fur colour ranging from chestnut or reddish-brown, greyish brown to dark slaty. Some have colour spots ranging from faded tan to black; in others, the spotting pattern is only around the belly and inner legs. Its undersides and areas around the eyes, cheeks, chin, and throat are lighter in colour to almost white.

Oct 17, 2022 · The fur of an African golden cat can be any shade between a light slaty brown and a dark slaty brown. Some of them have patches, the colours of which vary from a faded tan to a deep black. Some of them only have spots on their stomachs and the insides of their legs.

This secretive cat has come to roam the dense forests of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Kibale National Park, and the great Rwenzori Mountains in Uganda. Thick undergrowth with plenty of prey makes these areas ideal habitats for the Caracal aurata.
