Found to the north of Skye on the Trotternish peninsula, Uig is a beautiful horsehoe-shaped bay that connects the magical island with the Outer Hebrides. Known for its bracing walks and stunning landscapes, it is a fantastic location from which to explore all that Skye has to offer.

Uig is situated partly on the raised beach around the head of the bay and partly on the steep slopes behind it. Two watercourses enter the bay at Uig: the River Rha from the north and the River Conon which drains Glen Uig to the east.

Uig is a charming port with ferry links to Uist and Harris. There is accommodation and a number of places to eat out in Uig. The Trotternish ridge provides an obvious focus for walkers but there are other shorter walks suitable for all abilities; the Fairy Glen is a beautiful whimsical walk through a valley produced by many small landslides.

The long pier projecting into the bay to serve the ferry is also used as a base for local fishing vessels. A stroll along the pier is an enjoyable way to see Uig from a different point of view (see the image at the foot of the page).

The post office is no longer in operation. At the Disruption the Free Church was built on reclaimed ground here, and a manse was built nearby in Uigen. A Free Presbyterian Church was constructed later, first as a corrugated iron building. Today there is a working pier with pontoons and moorings, a fishfarm, the surgery and the two churches.
