Baltimore-based US Wind, Inc. announced $11 million in funding over eight years to the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science for three research projects aimed at understanding the potential effects of offshore wind development on marine mammals, fish, and birds.

Since 2016, UMCES has engaged stakeholders throughout the watershed to transform the report card into an evaluation of the Chesapeake Watershed health. Watershed health includes traditional ecological indicators, but also economic and societal indicators.

Allegany County Economic and Community Development, the Appalachian Laboratory of the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science, and for-profit firms are partnering to advance environmental science and technology development while also creating high paying, long-term jobs in the county.

More than $1.4 million has been awarded to the UMCES Horn Point Laboratory to study a newly recognized form of coastal hypoxia—or low-oxygen zones—found on the West Florida Shelf, home to one of the nation’s most diverse and productive fisheries.
