2022年6月1日 · Originally built by Alco-Brooks as 3 cylinder UP 4-10-2 #8808 (serial #66734, class FTT-1), it proved to be less successful than predicted so the UP shops rebuilt the loco in January of 1943 by removing the center cylinder and renumbering it UP 5099 (class FTT-1-2).

Harley L. Kelso made several visits to Victorville, CA in mid-1947 to take photos of the soon-to-dieselize helper operations up the east side of Cajon Pass. A selection of these images ended up in a photo feature in the August 1948 issue of Railroad Magazine.

2018年3月25日 · Upon becoming UP units, all former C&NW SD50s were also rebuilt to what UP calls SD50Ms, reducing their horsepower from 3600 to 3500 and improving their cooling system, including installation of eight-blade cooling fans. Assigned UP 9940-9974 in December 1999; assigned back to UP 5060-5094 in January 2000.

Union Pacific SD70M #5099 leads what I believe is the Oakland, CA to Long Beach, CA stack train (IOALB-18) through Martinez. Built as SP 373 in 1995 as part of SPs final locomotive order. Admittingly far from a "great" photo. UP 6197 not pictured here but was the final trailing unit.
