Union Pacific 6930 is the most powerful diesel-electric locomotive at the museum. It is one of 47 identical locomotives built exclusively for the UP and called “Centennials” because they were delivered starting around the 100 th anniversary of the “Golden Spike” that completed the UP’s transcontinental railroad.

UP 6930 sits on display at IRM, along with other units. IRM also has a DD40AX. It was in need of some paint when we were there. My sone Drew (6 years old) looks really small on this mammoth locomotive! UP 6930 & SP 1518 shine the rails on the curve leading into IRM during the annual "Diesel Days" with the coach train.

Union Pacific Locomotive UP 6930, seen here in 1973, was an EMD DD40X locomotive with 6600 horsepower. It was one of the largest types of diesel locomotive ever built. 2024年11月18日 · Numbered as UP 6900-6946, they were known as "Centennial" locomotives because the initial deliveries started on the 100th anniversary of the May 10th 1869 driving of the golden spike at Promontory Summit, Utah. UP 6900 was rushed to completion to allow it to be part of the various ceremonies that took place in Utah on May 10th 1969.

Ex-SP locomotive was fifth in a six unit consist and is looking a little worse for wear. The early sun is wonderful for shooting eastbounds. This is Q324, approaching Cottage Grove on his way to Toledo. UP 6930 leads this autorack northbound on the UP Lhttle Rock Sub. DPUs bringing up the rear of an empty coal drag.

2018年1月13日 · UP 6930 was donated to Smoky Hill Railway & Historical Society, Shawnee Mission, Kansas, June 21, 1985, delivered August 1985; traded to Illinois Railway Museum in exchange for former Wabash coaches; UP 6930 was shipped from Kansas City to Chicago on October 31, 1991.
