UP 836 is a ghost engine. On June 18, 1953, UP 836, having just been equipped with a new whistle, had to take a passenger train during a heavy storm. Unfortunately, the old bridge couldn't support his weight, and he fell off the bridge, killing himself and injuring many passengers.

The Union Pacific FEF series consists of 45 4-8-4 "Northern" steam locomotives built by the American Locomotive Company (ALCO) between 1937 and 1944 and operated by the Union Pacific Railroad until 1959. Like the other Union Pacific steam classes, the acronym comes from the first letter of the spelling of its wheel arrangement: Four Eight Four.

UP 811, 821, 829, 834, 836, 853, 855, 856, 863, 865, and 866 (11 units, along with seven 700 class GP30s) were retired between late 1982 and mid 1983. All were reinstated in September 1983 and rebuilt using the engines, and sometimes the main generator, from retired GP30Bs. UP 707 was the last to be returned to service, in January 1984.
