The EMD GP30 is a 2,250 hp (1,680 kW) four-axle diesel-electric locomotive built by General Motors Electro-Motive Division of La Grange, Illinois between July 1961 and November 1963. [2] A total of 948 units were built for railroads in the United States and Canada (2 only), including 40 cabless B units for the Union Pacific Railroad .

Included in the total were 112 units with cabs, and 40 cabless, or "booster" units. This 152-unit fleet was delivered in four separate groups: UP 800-874, UP 875, UP 700-735, and UP 700B-739B.

Introduced in 1961, the General Purpose 30 locomotive is easily recognized due to its unique engine-hood style. Utilizing the 567-series engine, the GP30 produced 2250HP. To reduce costs of new units, some GP30s were built using AAR Type-B trucks from trade-in ALCO locomotives.

This design became EMD's standard until the FRA mandated the wide "safety" cab on every new locomotive in the 1990s.
