The NRE 3GS21B is a low-emissions diesel genset locomotive built by National Railway Equipment (NRE). Instead of a single prime mover, the NRE genset locomotive is powered by three separate 700 horsepower (522 kW ) Cummins QSK19C engines providing a total power output of 2,100 horsepower (1,570 kW ).

Union Pacific created and pioneered Genset locomotive technology. Gensets served as a bridge technology to reduce emissions, although reliability and maintenance challenges prevented their greater adoption.

Union Pacific is aggressively working to reduce emissions by pioneering new technology. The Generator-Set (or Genset) switcher is an important emissions-reducing component in Union Pacific’s fleet. • The Genset switcher reduces emissions of oxides of nitrogen by 80 percent and particulate matter by 90 percent.
