UPY 1488 was one of the few UP switching locomotives to receive the small winged shield logo, applied to the front end. UPY 1488 was assigned to the Chicago area for much of its time on UP, and was assigned for maintenance to the former C&NW M-19A locomotive shop.

Genset locomotives have two or three gensets that directly power the motors. Advantage was only the gensets needed were fired up, the rest were off-line, including total shutdown when unit is parked. Hybrids have seemed to lost the market to Gensets.
