In the Hebrew Bible, the Urim (Hebrew: אוּרִים‎ʾŪrīm, "lights") and the Thummim (Hebrew: תֻּמִּים‎Tummīm, "perfection" or "truth") are elements of the hoshen, the breastplate worn by the High Priest attached to the ephod, a type of apron or garment.

Urums (/ ʊəˈr uː m /, / ʊ ˈ r uː m /; Greek: Ουρούμ, Urúm; Turkish and Crimean Tatar: Urum, IPA:) are several groups of Turkic-speaking Greek Orthodox people native to Crimea. The emergence and development of the Urum identity took place from 13th to the 17th centuries.

The Urim and Thummim (Heb. אוּרִים וְתֻמִּים) was a priestly device for obtaining oracles. On the high priest's ephod (an apron-like garment) lay a breastpiece (חֹשֶׁן) – a pouch inlaid with 12 precious stones engraved with the names of the 12 tribes of Israel – that held the Urim and Thummim (Ex. 28:15–30; Lev. 8:8).

In the broader biblical narrative, the Urim and Thummim underscore the theme of God's sovereignty and His active involvement in guiding His chosen people. They remind believers of the importance of seeking God's guidance in all aspects of life and the assurance that He provides direction to those who earnestly seek Him.

Within the fold of the High Priest’s breastplate were the Urim and Thummim (lights and perfections), which served as an oracle, divining whether or not the Jewish people should take a certain course of action.

Since each stone was inscribed with the names of the 12 tribes, the Talmud teaches that it functioned as a kind of Ouija board, withm messages being spelled on the Urim and Tummim for the High Priest.

What exactly are the “Urim and Thummim” of Aaron’s breastplate? The Torah mentions it without any further explanation. The Urim and Thummim (urim v’tumim) refer to a single piece of parchment which had God’s ineffable name inscribed on it (the Tetragrammaton). It was placed inside Aaron’s breastplate (choshen), between the two folds.
