The VAX 8000 is a discontinued family of superminicomputers developed and manufactured by Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) using processors implementing the VAX instruction set architecture (ISA). The 8000 series was introduced in October 1984 with the 8600, taking over the high-end of the VAX lineup.

The VAX 85xx, 87xx, and 88xx systems are a range of uni-processor and multi-processor supermini VAX systems that share being built around the NMI Memory Interconnect bus (probably the 'Nautilus Memory Interconnect', although no remaining DEC documentation gives the expansion of 'NMI').

The VAX 8810/8820/8830/8840 systems are four VAX 88x0 computer models, the difference between them being the number of CPUs installed in the basic cabinet: The first three may be upgraded in the field by the installation of additional CPU (s). Additionally there is a prepackaged VAXcluster system VAX 8842 made of two VAX 8820.

Between 1977 and 2000, Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) produced a wide range of computer systems under the VAX brand, all based on various implementations of the DEC-proprietary instruction set architecture of the same name.

DEC introduced the $15,500 VAX-SDE Science Integration Package, which was developed to ease development of applications for seismic analysis, high energy physics, weather forecasting, and molecular modeling for the Cray supercomputers.
