Vocal cord dysfunction (VCD) occurs when vocal cords do not move properly. Instead of opening up when a child breathes in, the vocal cords close. This makes breathing difficult because the child isn’t fully able to inhale. VCD is also called paradoxical vocal fold motion disorder (PVFM) and laryngeal dysfunction.

Vocal Cord Dysfunction (VCD) is a condition in which the vocal cords are pulled towards each other, closing or narrowing the space for the air to flow into the windpipe. There are times when the vocal cords should close, such as when speaking or swallowing (See picture B). VCD occurs when the vocal cords are pulled together at the wrong time.

VCD episodes occur for a period of time and then go away. Because VCD is rare, your child's doctor may misdiagnose it as asthma. The condition mostly occurs in teens but can show up in children as young as 8. At the VCD Center at UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh, we diagnose and treat kids of all ages.
