A voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) is an electronic oscillator whose oscillation frequency is controlled by a voltage input. The applied input voltage determines the instantaneous oscillation frequency.

Voltage controlled oscillators are commonly used in frequency (FM), pulse (PM) modulators and phase locked loops (PLL).

As its name implies, a controlling voltage sets the frequency of the output of a VCO. The block diagram of a VCO is shown in Figure 6.4.8 (a) where a slowly varying input signal, vi, determines the frequency, f0, of the signal produced by an oscillator. This is usually achieved by varying the capacitance of a varactor diode in a resonator.
